After a record of 2-15-4 in their past 21 games and being outscored 38-7 in that span, the Anaheim Ducks fired coach Randy Carlyle. GM Bob Murray will take over coaching duties until the end of the season. Prior to this dismal stretch the Ducks endured a franchise record 12-game losing (0-8-4) streak. At this point the Ducks are in last place in the Western Conference with 53 points and have very little chance of making the playoffs.
So what is wrong with the Ducks? Let’s start with the only thing that is going right and that is the goaltending of John Gibons. Gibons has kept the Ducks in games much longer than they deserved on many nights. If the Ducks weren’t such a terrible team Gibons would be a serious contender for the Vezina trophy given to the leagues’ top goaltender.
On the top of the list is goal scoring. The Ducks leading goal scorer
has only 13 goals. The Ducks are dead
last in goal scoring ranking 31st.
The Duck rank near the bottom of the league in shot on goal
differential. The Ducks have trouble
breaking the puck out of their own zone.
The Ducks have had to deal with numerous injuries, dressing 37 different
players so far this season. The Ducks
only hope is to regroup and start planning for next season.
